Software Development for the NHS

DCSL Software has a unique relationship with the NHS. Having developed a number of highly successful applications for various NHS organisations across the UK, we understand that you expect delivery of top class software at a competitive price and usually at very short notice.

DCSL Software offers two distinct services aimed at the NHS:-

  • Database applications - using advanced, unique techniques acquired over the last 15 years, our team at DCSL Software are able to create bespoke database-driven applications extremely quickly and to a very high quality. Being browser-based, applications can be accessed from anywhere without any client installation, significantly reducing IT hassles. Optionally, installation of the application, security, storage and application availability (performance, backup and so on), is all handled by DCSL and Rackspace (UK leading hosting specialists). Or you can install the application on any Windows 2003 server within the N3 network.
  • Websites - does your PCT, Hospital, GP Surgery or NFP organisation need a new website with Content Management (CMS) capabilities? DCSL Software has been developing websites large and small from 1994. If you need a two page website or a two thousand page website, we have the in-house technical & design experience to bring you a world class website to boost the appeal and exposure of your services.

NHS Case Studies

Frimley Park Hospital NHS Trust

Frimley Park Hospital serves patients in north Hampshire, west Surrey and east Berkshire. They offer a wide range of services and achieved foundation trust status in April 2005.

DCSL Software has been working with Frimley Park Hospital on a number of varying projects, including databases and websites, since 2006. In particular we worked closely with Frimley Park scientists and consultants to devise a breakthrough application called "QPoint" which ensures the reliability of life-critical blood glucose results essential to the management of diabetes. Thousands of healthcare professionals and individuals submit monthly readings to the scheme, where they are analysed for statistical variance. Each individual participant in the scheme is then sent a personalised report in the post advising on performance of their meter. A small sachet is attached to the report, containing a non-biological test sample ready for the next reading to be taken. For more details on this project please click the button below.

The National Association for End of Life care (Omega)

Omega, located in Shrewsbury, commissioned DCSL Software to build a database to store the details of patient deaths so statistical analysis may provide an insight to end of life care standards in the UK. The application can be seen here at https://www.adaonline.org.uk. This system allows GPs to log in securely, enter specific patient details via a user friendly “questionnaire” and see an informative graphical feedback report showing how their practice performed against other practices in the UK. There is also a highly comprehensive backend facility allowing Omega to manage all aspects of the system including Users, Patients, GPs, PCTs and SHAs. It currently holds thousands of GP surgeries and tens of thousands of anonymous patient records.

It took just two and a half weeks to develop this whole system from scratch including the “planning” time. From Omega contacting DCSL Software to delivery LIVE it took a total of five weeks.

Brighton & Hove Integrated Care Service (BICS)

BICS is a not-for-profit organisation that process GP patient referrals for over 80 practices in the Brighton & Hove area. Their previous system consisted of a mixture of paper, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and a Microsoft Access database built over several years. Data transfer throughout the process was fragmented, with unmaintainable application code. In turn, this lead to frustration and delays in fulfilling referrals, without means of adding much needed functionality.

BICS contacted DCSL Software in the hope that a detailed list of requirements could be incorporated into one system. Having spent time with BICS to discuss their issues and understand their processes in detail, we supplied a successful proposal that outlined our suggested solution. This consisted of a web-based database application running on the N3 network which enables BICS administrators and GPs to enter patient referrals into a highly intuitive, user role focused system. On top of this, management benefit from an advanced reporting platform allowing detailed analysis of patient referrals and statistics. This helps them monitor the service, identify any issues ahead of time and proactively resolve them before problems occur.

The application “planning” took three weeks for our business analysts to complete, and the application code was built in a further four weeks. A total of seven man-weeks was spent on the project.
